Restoration Church - Statement of Faith
This statement of faith looks deeply into the core beliefs of Restoration Church. We have drawn from several great confessions of the church throughout the ages to compile a statement of faith that mirrors the strong beliefs and teachings we hold regarding the Christian faith. We have pulled from the 1689 London Baptist Confession, 1853 New Hampshire Confession, the 1859 Abstract of Principles, and the Baptist Faith & Message 2000.
Restoration Church is baptist in its theology, doctrine, and association. This church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana.
Our hope is that you will be blessed and even drawn into worship as you consider what we believe.
The Scriptures of the Old and New Testament were given by inspiration of God, and are the only sufficient, certain, and authoritative rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience. These texts, in their original languages, are both infallible and inerrant.
The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for His own glory, man's salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down or necessarily contained in the Holy Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelation of the Spirit, or traditions of men. Nevertheless, we acknowledge the inward illumination of the Spirit of God to be necessary for the saving understanding of such things as are revealed in the Word, and that there are some circumstances concerning the worship of God, and government of the church, common to human actions and societies, which are to be ordered by the light of nature and Christian prudence, according to the general rules of the Word, which are always to be observed.
There is but one God, the Maker, Preserver, and Ruler of all things, having in and of Himself, all perfections, and being infinite in them all; and to Him all creatures owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience. God is revealed to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence or being.
Father - God as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of human history according to the purposes of His grace. He is all powerful, all knowing, all loving, completely just, and perfectly wise. He is the Holy Creator, Sovereign Ruler, giver of life and breath to mankind, and sustainer of all things. While He is both immanent and transcendent, the Father reveals Himself to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Son - Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind - yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission.
Spirit - The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine. He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures, and through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He convicts men of sin, of unrighteousness, and of impending judgment; He calls men to the Savior, and effects regeneration. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His indwelling presence in the Christian guarantees that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, discipleship, and ministry.
Man is the special creation of God, made in His own image and free from sin; but, through the temptation of Satan and by his free choice, he transgressed the command of God, and fell from his original holiness and righteousness; whereby his posterity inherit a nature corrupt and wholly opposed to God and His law, are under condemnation, and as soon as they are capable of moral action, become actual transgressors.
The sanctity and unique nature of humanity is evident in that God created man in His own image, and in that Christ died for man; therefore, every person of every race possesses full dignity and is worthy of respect and Christian love.
IV. Way of Salvation
We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; that, by the Father’s decree, the Son of God freely but sinlessly took our nature upon Himself; honored the Divine Law by His personal obedience; atoned for our sins by His death; rose from the dead; now reigns in heaven; and, is in all ways qualified to be a suitable, compassionate, and all-sufficient Savior.
V. Repentance & Faith
We believe that repentance and faith are both sacred duties and inseparable graces, produced in our souls by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. Repentance and faith deeply convince us of our guilt, danger, and helplessness, and the way of salvation by Christ. Through Christ we turn to God with authentic contrition, confession, and supplication for mercy and, at the same time, heartily receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, Priest, and King. We rely on Him alone as the only and all sufficient Savior.
Such is the provision which God hath made through Christ in the covenant of grace for the preservation of believers unto salvation; that although there is no sin so small but it deserves damnation; yet there is no sin so great that it shall bring damnation on them that repent; which makes the constant preaching of repentance necessary.
VI. Substitutionary Atonement
This office the Lord Jesus did most willingly undertake, that He was made under the law, and did perfectly fulfill it, and underwent the punishment due to us, which we should have borne and suffered. He was made sin and a curse for us; enduring most grievous sorrows in His soul, and most painful sufferings in His body. He was crucified, and died, and remained in the state of the dead, yet saw no corruption: on the third day He arose from the dead with the same body in which He suffered, with which He also ascended into heaven, and there sits at the right hand of his Father making intercession, and shall return to judge men and angels at the end of the world.
The Lord Jesus, by His perfect obedience and sacrifice of Himself, which He through the eternal Spirit once offered up unto God, hath fully satisfied the justice of God,
procured reconciliation, and purchased an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father hath given unto Him.
VII. Justification, Redemption & Adoption
We believe that justification is the great gospel blessing that, from His fulness, Jesus Christ bestows upon those who believe in Him; that, based upon principles of righteousness, justification consists in the pardon of sin and the promise of eternal life; is not bestowed upon us in any consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through Christ’s own redemption and righteousness; is freely imputed to us by God through faith; brings us into a state of most blessed peace and favor with God; and, secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity.
All those that are justified, God granted, in and for the sake of His only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption, by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and privileges of the children of God, have His name put upon them, receive the spirit of adoption, have access to the throne of grace with boldness, are enabled to cry Abba, Father, are pitied, protected, provided for, and chastened by Him as by a Father, yet never cast off, but sealed to the day of redemption, and inherit the promises as heirs of everlasting salvation.
VIII. Freeness of Salvation
We believe that the gospel freely declares the blessings of salvation to all humanity;
that the gospel demands of all humanity an immediate heartfelt repentance and obedient faith; and, that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth except his own total, inherent depravity and voluntary refusal to submit to the Lord Jesus Christ that will result in his awful condemnation.
We believe that sanctification is the process by which, according to the will of God,
we are made partakers of His holiness; that sanctification is a progressive work; that sanctification begins in regeneration; that the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, our sealer and comforter, carries out sanctification in believers’ hearts by the continual use of appointed means, especially the Word of God, self-examination, self-denial, watchfulness, and prayer.
X. Perseverance of the Saints
We believe that true believers persevere in their faithfulness to Christ, which is the grand mark that distinguishes them from false professors; that a special providence
watches over the true believers’ welfare; and, that true believers are “kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.”
This perseverance of the saints depends not upon their own free will, but upon the immutability of the decree of election, flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father, upon the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ and union with Him, the oath of God, the abiding of His Spirit, and the seed of God within them, and the nature of the covenant of grace.
XI. Baptism & Lord’s Supper
We believe that Christian Baptism is the immersion of a believer in water, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, to show forth in a solemn and beautiful emblem, our faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior. Christian baptism is a prerequisite to the privileges of church membership.
The Lord’s Supper is that ordinance of the church in which believers, by the sacred use of bread and wine, are to commemorate together the dying love of Christ; and, always precede with solemn self-examination.
XIII. Of the Church
A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel; observing the two ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws, exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word, and seeking to extend the gospel to the ends of the earth. Each congregation operates under the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes. In such a congregation each member is responsible and accountable to Christ as Lord. Its scriptural officers are pastors and deacons. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.
The New Testament speaks also of the church as the Body of Christ which includes all of the redeemed of all the ages, believers from every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation.
Marriage is to be between one man and one woman. The marriage covenant between a man and woman is unique in that it is a glorious illustration of the everlasting relationship between Christ and the church.
XIV. Civil Government
We believe that God establishes civil government for the interests and good order of human society; and, that we should pray for, conscientiously honor, and obey civil magistrates except in things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ.
XV. Of the World to Come
God hath appointed a day wherein he will judge the world in righteousness, by Jesus Christ; to whom all power and judgment is given of the Father; in which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged, but likewise all persons that have lived upon the earth shall appear before the tribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds, and to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or evil.
As Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there shall be a day of judgment, both to deter all men from sin, and for the greater consolation of the godly in their adversity, so will He have the day unknown to men, that they may shake off all carnal security, and be always watchful, because they know not at what hour the Lord will come, and may ever be prepared to say, Come Lord Jesus; come quickly.
